The announcement comes at a notable time for OpenAI, which is already working on AI-powered hardware in partnership with former Apple design chief Jony Ive. That device is expected to launch around 2027, further strengthening speculation that ChatGPT could evolve into a core computing platform.
ChatGPT to Become an Operating System
At present, ChatGPT primarily exists as an app and web-based platform. However, its AI-driven conversational layer, combined with backend agents that can connect to multiple services, already allows it to function as an interface rather than a single-purpose tool.
This direction became clearer after OpenAI introduced Apps within ChatGPT, enabling third-party services to integrate directly into the chatbot. Users can now complete in-app tasks without leaving the ChatGPT interface, blurring the line between application and operating system.
The combination of conversational AI, integrated apps, built-in search, contextual memory, and autonomous agents places ChatGPT just one step away from functioning as an operating system.
Why OpenAI Needs an App Platform Leader

This is where Glen Coates’ appointment becomes significant. Coates previously worked at Shopify as Vice President and Head of Core Product, where he gained experience building large-scale platforms that support developers and third-party applications.

During an interaction with TechCrunch, Coates openly discussed OpenAI’s ambitions. He explained that the company wants ChatGPT to function like an operating system where users can access different applications based on their needs.
“The evolution we’re trying to make over the next few years is one where ChatGPT itself is more like an operating system where you can come and use applications. If you want to write, there’s an app for that. If you want to code, there’s an app for that. If you want to interact with goods and services, there are applications for you,” he said.
This approach mirrors traditional operating systems, but with AI acting as the central control layer rather than icons, menus, or windows.
Strategic Timing for OpenAI
OpenAI’s push to turn ChatGPT into an operating system appears strategically timed. The company has already built a strong data centre infrastructure and established partnerships with major platforms such as Adobe, Canva, Zillow, and others.
